In a game marred by penalties, the Rampage capitalized with a dominant 7-0 victory over the New Mexico Renegades on Friday.
The Rampage began and completed most of the game in the New Mexico end of the ice but Renegades goalie Rett Vossler began with a solid performance in the first. It wasn't until just before the close of the frame that Bobby Watson was able to nab the first goal, which was assisted by Shane Khalaf and Sean Heidrick. Khalaf followed that assist by adding two goals of his own in the second period. Both were power play goals. With the momentum clearly in the Rampage's favor, James Ryerse was able to capitalize on an even strength goal. The Renegades added more players to the penalty box allowing Sean Heidrick to cap off the period with a five on three power play goal.
The third period began with much of the same frustration and a loaded penalty box which allowed Mario Dalesandro to get another five on three goal for the Rampage. At that point, things seemed to settle down and both teams began to play a much better game of hockey. The Renegades made a strong push but were held off by solid goaltending from Hayden Capuozzo. While Colton Ishmael, the Renegades goaltender who came in after the ejection of Vossler, held very strong, Shane Khalaf capped off a stellar night with a hat trick, once again assisted by Watson and Heidrick.
Both teams will meet again on Saturday at 7:30 pm Mountain Time.
